meditation
Illustration for Outisde Magazine's "The Hardway". The writer goes on a three day meditation retreat and has a hard time letting go of his type-A goal oriented personality. Mostly, the story was about how outdoor, athletic, adventure types are able to clear their mind of all the excess and learn to focus. I read this and was interested in doing something calm or zen but honestly had a hard time coming up with a solid concept. Perhaps mostly due to the fact stories that are filled with action or some interesting slant are usually easier for me than something that's about "clearing your mind". I ended up having a lot of fun drawing it especially the Hokusai tree.

josh, i just love your line work and your color choices!
it's like you've known all my secret favorites. ;)
do you silk screen in the colors - and then the black...or do you pre paint the paper with a brush and then screen the balck...
Very smart. I think you nailed it perfectly.
Love the calmness of the top half . Can't go wrong with Hokusai.
Good lord man, this works the dogs spuds!
Your colour choice is spot on and the line effortless.super duper
Very nice... makes me think of Ever Meulen, a Belgian illustrator (he's 60ys old). Check google if you want to see more of it...
who do you think will win...you or frank?
frank said he'll destroy you!
That's beautiful!
I would win.
I don't know what the contest is about...?
I believe in Nathan, though. He's the founder and the silent champion at the Plundering.
oh, and I LOVE the illustration, though my least favorite was picked to go to final. I really like the watery house one.
I think from an editorial perspective, the one selected reads immediately and is more focused. It takes a while to get the gist of the 1st sketch. Although, I don't doubt the watery house would have been equally eye catching had it gone to final.
yeah I agree with you Lou, I thought the canoe was going to get approved but was thought to be too boring for a story that needed a good hook. Sometimes, I have to get through all the bad ideas to arrive at something that works.
Thomas, I checked out Ever Meulen, and really like his drawings....great colors and energy
it looks sweet josh. the final idea definitely works the best.
awesome josh, work keeps getting better man, good luck this weekend.
these are great drawings and illustration!! Love how you handle lines and shapes!
Hmm I see my comments has been `lost`, so here it is again:
"Did you just paste a load of left over illustrations together to make a new one?
You did didn't you! Nice way to recycle."
Recycling is healthy, and Josh does it right and draws from his own resources, as opposed to artists borrowing and stealing from shallow pools of imagery that's so prevalent in these internet-charged times. In Josh's case, a discerning eye can tell that he's inspired by things other than the next link on Pixelsurgeon. He digs deep and comes up with something fresh and contemporary.
Hey, i don't see any octopi!
Golf clubs or Crackberry? Good to ponder on, then maybe stop & look around at all the junk in my place, hmmmmmm?
Smooch,
The Tart
