What The World Needs Now...

by josh

For the New Yorker. On Burt Bacharach's new album "At This Time". Apparently a few tracks were co-produced by Dr. Dre. I went out and bought the CD...for reference of course. If anyone isn't familiar with Burt, he's the King of Easy Listening. I think he's been mostly producing for the last decade or so, until this "landmark" album. On the first listen, it became very obvious which tracks Dr. Dre had a hand on. Sort of a lazy ghetto, west coast synthesizer/ drum machine sound. Anyways, they went for something not so over the top...and I had a few songs stuck in my head for days. catchy.

i know where josh gets his influence from. Check out pietariposti.com. Some guy from spain.

1. Clearly the guy in Spain is the one biting Josh's work. You can tell via the approach to concepts and design of his work, it's just not as honest as Josh's.
2. Pietari's NEW work looks more like Josh's.
3. Most importantly - Josh isn't really trying to hide his influences from old books from the 40's - 60's. Maybe both should be accused of copying? Josh does a great job by updating it and makes it his own through his concepts and use of color / design.
4. People respond to work that feels familiar. It's okay for an illustrator to take influence and make it their own over time. Cases in point: Tavis Coburn, Gary Taxali, Christian Northeast, Jody Hewgill, David Plunkert...all of them have sourced from the past and have pulled it to be their own.

thanks for the quick reply, anonymous #3.

we've known about josh's "influence" on pietari posti's work for a long time now. people started leaving comments about it on his guestbook, so he took it down.

Did you know he has a blog too? it's called the thepie-lundering.com. He set it up with his friends Stank Frockton and Hatin Nuang.

...the sincerest form of flattery.

Posti and Josh are both amazing illustrators, and to an untrained eye I could see how someone might get confused. However Josh's line has a certain roughness to it and he obviously spends some time developing a interesting concept while Posti's work is prettier, using a refined line and less emphasis on the concept.

Anyhoo, style shmile, anyone properly trained can copy any artist from leonardo to phil hayes- only ideas are truly yours...and even those only fleetingly.

Both these guys are working hard and making money doing what they love...keep on keep on.

More than ever now, there seems to be more "influencing" and "borrowing" because of the interweb. Sometimes I think illustrators shouldn't even be allowed to look at another's work unless it's from outside of our field. Illustrators need to be aware of where they are pulling their influences from because the safest and most original influences come from outside sources. ie: architecture, photography, textiles, life, drugs, anything....

Agreed. Even more relevant would simply be personal testimony and experience.

posti is getting better and better with each new illustration, his compositions and colors are great in his new bicycle piece. I dunno josh, maybe you should be looking into posti for new inspiration.

I want to say few words to this conversation also. First Josh is amazing illustrator, one of the best ones in contemporary illustration, and I´m massive fan of his work. He´s truly inspirational artist, but I hope you can see other influencies in my work also, to name few Mike Mignola, Ashley Wood, schiele and hundred others.. and all of this mixed in to my blend.
And I´m sure Josh is not getting any influencies from me, allthough I would be honoured to hear that.
I took the guestbook down because some Posti hater started to send me five page long "sex,sex,cock,cock,porn..etc." messages. And the whale piece I had done long before for save the whales project.
Anyway, wanted to say that Josh deserves all the credit he can get, and that all of you three are doing great work!

I guess my eye is not so sophisticated, but I only see the slightest similiarities. The ideas and composition seem to go down two different paths. It's like comparing Joseph Wright of Derby and T. Eakins. That's not fair, they're 100 years apart. More accurately it's as to compare Fernando Yáñez with Leonardo. (Also, to be fair Leonardo was a biter, and a bitch.)
Finally, there can be only one solution...A draw-off! The loser, (their are no real losers,) to be executed.
