Would-Be Timeline
Here's a piece I did recently about Asian-Americans in music. This original sketch was for a two page illustrated timeline with red lines acting as a placeholder for the text...

...but once I received the final text and started writing it out, it turned out to be a bit overwhelming...

...which brought me to this solution. Interesting maybe, but not so fun to read.

Finally, I got word from the AD that the spread had been reworked to address the text problem. The text was taken out and the illustration resized, so I started doing sketches which were strangely reminiscent of my earlier angry sketches. Still, I wasn't happy with any of the sketches until I brought back the red lines from the original sketch, which helped tie the piece together while suggesting both time and music.

Nice one! Thanks for sharing.
That's a great illustration
I really like your drawing style and your palette alot.
I think if you would have made the girls hair(on the right) a little lighter in value, it would have a better flow to the piece. It seems a bit to heavy on that side (composition wise)

nathan huang, the legend.
Wow, nathan this came out awesome... i was doint the william hung pose when i saw the final piece.
Another great piece, Nathan. I wonder, since they re-worked the text, would you be able to show an example of how it fit within the page? That would be great.
just like Jon, I too was raising my fist in the air by the end of this post
badass....
dom - thanks. i share when i can, except when it comes to limited edition comics with gold foil covers and hologram comic cards.
oskar - thanks for the feedback. i made the illustration heavy on the right to compensate for the timeline text that will be put to the left of the illo. i'm hoping it balances out the spread.
albert - legendary, but for all the wrong reasons.
jon - i was doing the william hung pose when i found out i got to draw william hung.
frank - i don't have an example, but they're going to put the text to the left of the illustration. the right and the bottom of the illo are going to bleed off the page. at least that's what i'm told.
josh - stop copying jon.
hey guys, you three are great ilustrators, is my first time visiting this blog and im amazed. i ll go now to visit your webpages. P
