a chance for y'all to calm down

by Frank

Alright, sorry to disappoint, no Josh post today. Haha. Anyway, This is the last couple of drawings I did for my sketchbook. I have plenty o' stuff I'm working on for my show with Josh coming up but I'm going to try to keep that under wraps for now. We'll be seeing more of it soon enough. Anyway, in the red one I was inspired by the back of the Full Metal Jacket package back(it was a screen shot). The other one has a semi drunken sketch of fellow artists Andrew Foster and a sober one of Natalia Fabia. Mister Cochran commented about the Natalia drawing: "ooo I like it, it's sensitive." Thanks, Josh.

cars

by josh

I posted one of these a while back on my site, but here's the complete 5 spreads for Esquire Russia's "100 Cars We Love". Each spread had to have specific cars that were mentioned in the story. I'm not even sure if it's gone to print yet. Apparently Esquire asked a few different artists who all turned them down...and I never really understood why until I started the first spread. They sent me a list of different situations and 100 different models of cars that needed to be in the spreads. Needless to say turned out to be quite a challenge. anyways, no sketches, mostly due to the lack of time. I think they came out a bit more interesting that way....a little hit or miss maybe.

Also, a rambling, semi coherent feature here

fun with duotone

by josh

I got asked to do an illustration for a journal that the Shivas Iron Society does I think twice a year. The design agency in charge of this project had a whole section printed in duotone, which is always pretty rad.

The story was about golf having too many rules and regulations almost to the point of ridiculousness. Both the art director and myself felt that the illo shouldn't be too serious. I sent them the sketch which everyone liked the concept but felt the background should be a bit more abstract, so I came up with that first version...sort of this geometric golf course, which actually got sent back to me with instructions to simplify.....

Anyways, looking back I think the AD was probably right....geometric golf course?! pshhh

Napkin drawings at the Dresden

by Frank

hello,

last night i chilled out at the dresden and did the following drawings while sipping on a rum n' diet coke. It was oh-so-good. Anyway, the waitress Andrea (prounounced ahn-dray-uh) kept bringing me napkins so I kept on drawing. I left her a healthy tip.

"Love in the Time of Acne"

by Nathan

Due to the overwhelming response to my napkin sketch, I've decided to post again. Here's a page from "Love in the Time of Acne," one of the books I'm working on, from sketch to near-finish.

the scribble

the kind-of-tightened sketch

the not-quite-finished finish

Wasn't that exciting? Don't wet your pants now.

Napkin.

I did these today for fun, I have watercolor on them, too, which is so much fun. I was inspired by the comics show at the HAMMER

rawk

by josh

Album cover for this punk band called The Rituals. I initially had an idea to use the umbrellas and rain. The band wanted to have some sort of strange or dark imagery, so I think we came to somewhat of a comprimise. I tried to get the general feeling of the album and tried hard not to make another typical punk album cover ( lots of help from Nicolo, the lead singer).... The inside drawing (with lyrics) is of random people, the band member's portraits mixed in. p.s. ara once again saved me with awesome type skillz. and kerning. i learned to appreciate the subtle art of kerning

scientific notations

by josh

hello! welcome to the new frank, nathan and josh blog! I suppose we're going to be posting stuff that we're working on or other art related goodness. I'm starting this off by posting something I just finished for Entertainment Weekly's Forecast issue. i think it should be coming out on the newsstands in the next week or so. The art director gave me somewhat of a free reign to do whatever I wanted to do. So I came up with this idea of an observatory and scientists
