Beasts!
A while ago I received an email from Jacob Covey at Fantagraphics telling me a book on mythological creatures was being created. I choose the tritons mainly because they were known to create shipwrecks....plus the list of monsters was growing short and I really couldn't decide. For those of you non-geeks...here's the description that I (loosely) went off of.
"This has come to be the name of a race of mermen described as humans with dolphin tails covered in scales. Their heads are matted with green or yellow hair and gills lie just behind their pointed ears. Unlike beautiful mermaids, these usually-male creatures have wide mouths with huge, fanged teeth and conjure storms with their conch-shell horns."
I sort of wanted to try a few different things, especially in the way I drew water and waves. In the end I think I was a bit surprised with the outcome. Definitely one of those pieces that I went back and forth on. I think mainly because it was never really worked out well in my head to begin with. Check out Chris' version of the werewolf.
