Canadian Business
Here's a piece I did for Canadian Business that I struggled with for a long time. It came out well in the end (thankfully), but while I was working on it, I was convinced I was the worst illustrator in the world.
The sketch stage was fine. I made a couple changes that the art director requested and then tightened up the drawing.

It wasn't until I started coloring the illustration that it went to hell. Here are two (of maybe six) miserably failed attempts to make the illustration understandable to myself. The red/pink version was a step in the right direction, but a bit too radioactive to work for the article.

Finally, after much cursing and red bull, the piece came around.

And just for kicks, here's a commisioned book cover I finished up this past week.

what's the name of those small swords again?
truthfully, i don't know. you should ask sam.
uh. dagger?
Knife?
Shortsword?
Dirk?
Main-Gauche?
Stiletto?
these are both really excellent but I have to say my favorites are the pink version of the first illustration. Also, that book cover is fantastic.
M.
I don't know anything about daggers... or whatever you are talking about. GREAT drawings by the way. You are brilliant.
they sort of look like that sword that the ninja turtles would wield
sais? i'll admit to knowing about those.
I love Canada.
It's clearly a bollock dagger.
clearly
the cover is amazing. just amazing. i think it's my desktop now...
cool stuff....I really like the book cover
Love the book cover as well . Like the use of the negative space. Great shapes too.
hi nathan!
awesome. Did you work with Tim Davin? He's great. Plus, he likes comics.
Thanks for the comments everyone!
M - I'm also fond of the punchiness of the pink version, but i think the final was the wiser decision in the end.
Sam - Thanks man. Don't worry, I won't accuse you of such knowledge on a public forum again.
Jon - I never knew about the bollock dagger until now. I don't know if I should thank you for that knowledge.
Ken - clearly
Aviv - Thanks. I'm honored to grace any desktop.
JK - thanks!
Dominic - Thanks. I think it's the graphic shapes that make the piece.
Jillian - Hi! Yea, it was Tim. He was great to work with. Plus, he mentioned you and Sam when he called me.
Lots of great comments on the book cover Nate! I've received a plethora of compliments on the quality and professionalism it exudes.
Can't wait to get it in print and I thank you - it was worth the wait.
I liked the red/pink version...but I dunno it might have been too exciting for the business world. Your blogs are really exciting, mine are weird haha!
Very pretty your drawings. I hope to see new, in a moment. Greetings!!! ;-)
I saw your illustrations in Time Out New York recently, you have great work on your website!
